[Exclusive Interview]: Robb Bank$ is an Enigma

Robb Bank$ wants you to underestimate him.

I met up with the mysterious Florida rapper during his Falconia tour stop in Boston. I interviewed him in his tour bus, with supporting artist Kid Trunks by his side. I’d best describe Bank$ as an enigma he doesn’t want you to try and look into too much, he knows you just won’t understand him.

I caught up with Robb to talk about his upcoming release, his music influences and his experiences with Rich Gang and his partnership with Empire records.

Listen to his latest EP, Cloverfield 2.0 and check out our interview belo.

Tamara: Thank you for having me! How is Boston and how is tour so far?
Robb Bank$: Boston is good! I don’t think I’ve been here before. The crowd was surprising to be honest, I didn’t think it was gonna be this lit.

You’re from New York but you grew up in Florida, how do both of those cities influence your sound?
New York didn’t influence my sound to be honest, I didn’t really learn anything in New York, I didn’t spend any time there. I spent all my time in Florida and I don’t remember anything from New York. Most that I remember is 106 & Park, shit like that, and just videos, and then I moved. Went to Fort Lauderdale. Florida shaped everything though. Fast music, Webbie, Boosie influenced me.

What kind of music did you grow up with?
As a kid, Sade. She’s my favorite artist ever.

You talk a lot about Sade, what do you think you take from her?
Everything. I can’t even explain it. Just like her whole demeanor, I’m just trying to be the male version of her. That’s why I drop music when I wanna drop it.

To go off of that, you’re not signed. What is it like being a part of Rich Gang but not being signed to them?
Well I am signed to Empire, I’ve got a partnership with them and my own label. Being a part of Rich Gang is great because I get to be around people like Birdman and my favorite rapper, Lil Wayne. Being around all of that, to me, has helped with the music. I was able to meet a lot of people like my engineer who helped me cultivate myself.

Did you start rapping or producing?
Rapping. I produce too but I don’t rap over my production. I like to make beats for other people.

Can you tell me a little bit about your “I Think I Might Be Happy” tag?
I don’t really know what to say about it, it is what it is. It’s just a tag. I was watching Skins one day as a kid and that’s where I took it from.

What do you do when you’re not making music?
I watch anime. All day. That’s it.

What’s your favorite anime?

Never heard of it.
Nobody knows it, it’s my favorite though.

What’s something that listeners should take from Cloverfield 2.0?
Nothing. It’s a little taste of like four songs. There’s so much more music coming out.

So when’s the next project dropping?
It’s turned in! I’m waiting like y’all! Man just put this shit out. Put it out. I want it to come out. It’s up to my label now to get the business side arranged, I got the music down.

How do you think that this next release is gonna show how you’ve grown since Calendars?
I don’t know. I don’t know to be honest, that’s hard to say. I just do what I want to do at all times.

So in an interview with Noisey you said that you want people to think that you are a “fucking ignorant fool.” So talk to me more about that.
*Kid Trunks and Robb Bank$ laugh*
Hahaha. I don’t know. I might have been high when I said that! Nah but what I mean when I say that is I don’t want someone to think that I don’t know what’s going on or like, I want them to underestimate me, you know what I mean? I like that. I like that I’m underestimated. It’s like, I’m the last one you’re supposed to underestimate, I could take your bitch-ass up.

What song of yours describes best where you’re at in life right now?
I don’t know. That’s so hard. That’s a great question. That’s probably the best question I’ve got since like being in—
Kid Trunks: Green Star.
Robb Bank$: Green Star?
KT: Did you not hear what you said in Green Star?
RB: No what?
KT: Everything you said in Green Star. Especially at the end. “Screaming free band till you free up on 93…”
RB: Damn Green Star! Trunk’s right.
KT: I know you brother.
RB: It’s lit brother! You snapped brother.
